The True India: Natural farming

“There is no need to accumulate crores of rupees for the future of your children. We have to leave them in good health. It is enough to give them life education; they will do well in life. I left a job paying Rs. 90,000 per month and have been doing natural farming and promoting traditional seeds for the past three years", says Tirupur Priya. Born into a farmer family in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, she has preserved about 600 varieties of traditional seeds and has been distributing them free of charge to thousands of people by post and several hundred in person. Excerpts from a recent video of hers:

“Those involved in farming nowadays are wanting to shift to money making vocations. Please don’t do that. Once you get into that, it is very difficult to leave all that and the associated lifestyle and return. If you have even a small piece of land, give life to traditional seeds and make traditional seed banks in your areas. Don’t leave it to an individual alone, but involve many people. We have had in Tirupur a seed bank for the past 10 years, and there are 16 teams of women.

“Don’t spend money and time travelling elsewhere searching for traditional seeds; search in your own region. They are most important for natural farming. The land has to be fertile for healthy plants and protection from insects. Insects attack the weak plants and also those grown well with a lot of nutrition. I am saying this from my observation for the past 16 years. You can also barter the seeds. There is no need for any employee to do this. Please understand that traditional seeds have no corporate owners. They belong to the farmers”.
