The Govt. of India has been celebrating the Quit India movement annually. A re-look at this custom in the light of facts of history shows that the Quit India movement was a monumental blunder by the Indian National Congress led by Gandhi and Nehru that were at the forefront of India's freedom struggle. The future of humanity was at stake with Nazi Germany-led nations marching to take over the world in World War II. Britain sent Sir Stafford Cripps to obtain the support of Indian leaders assuring dominion status for undivided India and freedom in the future in return for support in their war effort against Hitler (see text from Cripps Mission below). Sri Aurobindo who was behind the birth of Indian Nationalism on 7th August 1907 and who left politics to pursue an integral and transformational yoga for a greater future for India and the world advised the Congress leadership to accept Cripps proposal. According to Sri Aurobindo, Hitler was an instrument of Asuric forces and his aim in World War II was world domination including the invasion and conquest of India.

Gandhi rejected Cripps Mission and launched the Quit India movement on 9th August 1942. Dr. Ambedkar who is regarded as the Father of the Constitution of India, said the Quit India movement "is both irresponsible and insane, showing bankruptcy of statesmanship". If the British had quit as the Congress wanted and left India partitioned or in a civil war in 1942, the German Army would have easily invaded India by a pincer movement from the East and the West, which was their plan according to Sri Aurobindo. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose whose hatred for the British blinded him to the greater evil of German Nazism met Hitler and allied his Indian National Army with the Hitler-led Axis forces. If Bose would protest Hitler's atrocities in India he would have been imprisoned or liquidated the same way Hitler dealt with any ally who turned against him. If Nazi Germany had won World War II human civilization would have gone back by thousands of years to the barbaric age. Sri Aurobindo wrote that the Nazi Germans were 100 times worse than the British and if Hitler had won, "India would have had to spend a century or several centuries in a renewed servitude".
Defying Gandhi’s fatalist move, Indian Army under the British developed from a mere 2 lakhs soldiers at the beginning of the World War in 1939 became 25 lakhs strong by the end of World War II in 1945. They fought against the armies of the Hitler-led Axis nations in Africa, Europe, and Asia and nearly 87,000 Indian soldiers died in the war. India was untouched in World War II except that Japanese Army aided by Netaji’s Indian National Army who were part of Hitler’s Axis forces occupied parts of northeast India, Andamans and Burma but were defeated. Divine Will was behind the Allied Forces and the Axis nations led by Hitler’s Germany lost the war. The govt. of India should order a study of history including Sri Aurobindo’s published writings to decide if the Quit India movement is worthy of celebration or regret.

(e) During the critical period which now faces India and until the new Constitution can be framed His Majesty's Government must inevitably bear the responsibility for and retain control and direction of the defence of India as part of their world war effort, but the task of organising to the full the military, moral and material resources of India must be the responsibility of the Government of India with the co-operation of the peoples of India. His Majesty's Government desire and invite the immediate and effective participation of the leaders of the principal sections of the Indian people in the counsels of their country, of the Commonwealth and of the United Nations. Thus they will be enabled to give their active and constructive help in the discharge of a task which is vital and essential for the future freedom of India.
